Why Cockroaches Could Still Be In Your Home After The Holidays

The holidays have passed, a new year is upon us, and life feels like it’s given us a fresh start. Everything may not be fresh, though. Without your knowledge, you could be harboring some things from last year that are anything but fresh.

If cockroaches got into your home over the holidays, it’s highly unlikely that they went ‘out with the old’ on December 31. In fact, they’re probably still making themselves quite at home, and settling into their new digs with no intention of leaving anytime soon.

How Cockroaches Get Inside

Like most pests, when cooler temperatures arrive in the fall and early winter, cockroaches begin to look for a warm place to spend the cold months. Contrary to popular belief, your home doesn’t have to be dirty to attract them. In fact, just leaving food out on the counter could be enough to attract cockroaches' interest. Provide a dark, moist area, where they can spend their days, such as under a sink, and it’s likely that cockroaches will find your home a more than suitable place to spend the winter.

Cockroaches often get inside by crawling in from outdoors or coming inside when you carry in a grocery bag or package you received by mail. The holidays are often a time when cockroaches thrive due to the massive amounts of food we prepare during that time of year.

What Attracts Cockroaches to Your Home

During the holidays we sometimes prepare food as gifts, for a party we're hosting, or for a holiday dinner we're attending. Food that would usually be quickly put away often gets left out, giving cockroaches the opportunity to feast when we’re asleep. Once they’ve established themselves in our homes, they hang around, happy for a warm place to live.

Problems Cockroaches Cause

Besides the fact that they’re unappealing to look at, there are a number of reasons you do not want cockroaches in your home this year:

  • Cockroaches are filthy. They crawl around in bathrooms, sewers, and garbage cans, picking up bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can be transferred to anything they walk across. If you end up eating contaminated food, you could get seriously sick.
  • While rare, cockroaches have been known to bite if their food supply gets low enough.
  • Their shed skin and feces have been known to cause asthma attacks in humans.
  • Ridding Your Home of Cockroaches
  • Cockroaches are bad news. If you discover them in your home, they’re a pest you’ll want to eliminate right away. DIY methods of cockroach removal are usually ineffective at eliminating all the cockroaches in your home. If done improperly, these methods can even be dangerous.
