The delightful season of fall is upon us, however, with each new season, there are seasonal tasks and “to-do's" that just have to be done. It’s time to test smoke, fire, and carbon monoxide detectors. You may need to pull all of your appliances away from the wall to clean behind and underneath, too. These and other jobs can be time-consuming, and take away from enjoying this beautiful season. And, despite our best efforts sometimes, our summer fun and DIY projects have led to additional fall time clutter to deal with.

Clutter of any kind inside or out can be a perfect haven for insects and rodents. They will infest those areas, and that can lead to a multitude of pest problems in and around your home and yard. Many of these pests will be attracted to piles that are left unattended for long periods of time, giving them ample time to nest and stay hidden at the same time. Discarded lumber piles from building projects are especially attractive to rodents, like mice and rats. Centipedes and other crawling insects find comfort in piles of brush, leaves and other organic materials. In addition, wood piles, junk heaps, and general untidiness will gather a whole host of other pests. All of these pests can be quite a nuisance and some can be potentially dangerous.

There are some things that you can do yourself to help keep the pest population down on your property. Just follow these fall prevention tips:

  • Be sure to close off any holes or cracks pests are getting into your home through. Be sure to do this first, because once you have started the outdoor cleanup, the pests that are hidden there will be looking for sanctuary elsewhere. And, since your home provides for all of their needs for shelter, food, and water, that’s where they will go first.
  • Take the time to fix or replace all damaged or broken screens, vents, soffits, and any other physical barriers. Don’t forget to plug up the gaps around wires, cables, and pipes that come into your home as well. These provide perfect pest entry points.
  • Trim back trees that allow pests to access your rooftop, windows, and ledges.
  • Keep your lawn mowed and prune back shrubbery regularly.
  • Remove all plants from around your foundation, including cover plants and ivy.
