Many people are unaware that silverfish can move like a fish, or at least that’s what appears to happen. Silverfish are by far one of the strangest pests we deal with here in Lewisville Texas. With weird, silver, tear-shaped bodies, three bristle-like appendages protruding from their rear, and a distinct lack of wings, silverfish seem to be a pest straight out of a twisted Dr. Seuss universe. The good news is, silverfish are not dangerous to humans in the slightest. The bad news is, they are still a rather annoying and destructive pest.
One Fish, Two Fish, Three Fish, More, Four Fish, Five Fish, Through My Door
Silverfish will invade homes in a number of different ways, mainly through cracks and crevices in your foundation which can be caused by water damage. When rain builds up around the exterior walls of your home, a number of things can grow, such as mildew, fungi, mold, and algae. These organisms soften up the structural wood, leaving it more susceptible to pests that are looking to break in--in this case, silverfish. That being said, there are a few ways you as a homeowner can exclude silverfish from your home. First, evaluate the base of your home and seal any cracks or gaps by using a caulking gun. Second, have any areas of water damage repaired and properly sealed. Finally, make sure your gutters are unblocked, undamaged, and flowing properly. Keeping gutters clear and in good repair will greatly reduce water build-up and water damage around your home.
They’ll Bite Your Glue, Your Shampoo Too, Is There a Goo They Will Not Chew?
It’s true, silverfish have a bizarre diet. Eating everything from wallpaper to dead insects, to pretty much anything with cellulose. This can mean trouble for your home because, for a silverfish, it doesn’t matter if it’s a potato or your antique book collection, they will chew on it. This, combined with their ability to move around almost ninja-like, makes for an extremely elusive, annoying, and destructive pest.
