Getting Serious About Denton Termites

The first step in getting help is knowing that you have a problem. Although this saying is often used for people with addictions, it also fits quite well with termite infestations. Termite colonies often go unnoticed for months, if not years, before they are discovered, and by then the damage they have done is irreparable. This is not what you want for your home.

Early Signs of a Termite Infestation

If you are not looking for it, a termite infestation may go unnoticed. If you look for one but don’t know what to look for, you might miss it entirely. However, if you look for the following signs, you can find out early if termites are threatening your home.

  • Mud Tubes - Termites like to stay moist, and usually remain under the soil when outside. When they get to the edge of your home, if your home’s wood is not directly touching the ground, they will build pencil-sized mud tubes up your foundation until they reach the wood.
  • Water Damaged Wood - Termites prefer soft water damaged wood over anything else. If you investigate your home’s exterior and find any wood affected in this way, although it’s not a direct sign you have termites, it is a sign that your home could be at risk.
  • Chewed Up Trees - Termites do not just eat homes. If you have a dying tree or stump in your yard, they could be eating that as well. Take a look around your property for severely damaged wood that looks like it has tunnels through it as this may be a sign of an active termite colony on your property.

When Termites Are Active

Termites are active year-round here in Texas, but most species usually swarm during the spring and early summer months. There is, however, one species, the Formosan termite, that swarm during the fall.
