How To Spot Early Signs Of Cockroaches In Your Frisco Home

Cockroaches are nocturnal insects. Experts say that seeing one cockroach, especially during the day, is a warning sign of an infestation. They also say that seeing one roach is an indication that you probably have thousands of them in your walls. Today, we're going to discuss the problem of having thousands of cockroaches in your walls and how to spot the warning signs of an infestation early.

Why Roaches Are Bad

The pest roaches we have in Frisco are a disease threat. They get into sewers and dumpsters and hang out in other unsanitary places. They also feed on unsanitary things such as rotting organic sludge and the feces of animals. For this reason, they are linked to the spread of more than 33 kinds of bacteria, more than seven human pathogens, and at least six parasitic worms. They can contaminate your foods, surfaces, dishes, silverware, and more. Here are a few more ways they can be a problem:

  • They can accidentally bite when they nibble on dead skin in eyelashes, eyebrows, and around the mouths of sleeping people.
  • A rash can develop when cockroaches crawl on your skin.
  • There is a direct correlation between cockroaches and an increase in asthma symptoms.
  • Roaches can damage your belongings by nibbling on them or soiling them with their feces.

Early Cockroach Detection

There are some ways roaches can let you know they're around. If you know what these things are, you'll be able to detect the presence of roaches.

  • When a cockroach runs across a hard surface, you may hear it. The sound of their feet on your kitchen or bathroom floor can be a warning sign if you have good ears.
  • Cockroaches release pheromones that don't have a pleasant aroma. If you smell something that has an oily and sort of musty smell to it, you may be smelling cockroaches.
  • Cockroaches can eat important documents, wallpaper, clothing, book bindings, cardboard boxes, cardboard food containers, and more. If you see damage to items in your home, cockroaches could be to blame.
  • Ongoing sickness can alert you to a roach problem. If you or someone else in your home is dealing with chronic respiratory issues, or stomach pain and nausea, you should definitely do a thorough inspection of your home.

Do An Inspection

If you flick a light on and see a cockroach clinging to the wall above the switch, you don't have to wonder if you have an infestation. But it isn't this easy to see cockroaches at first. They tend to stay hidden, even at night. It is usually when food sources are depleted and cockroaches must compete for food that they start to appear. If you want to catch them early, you have to go looking for them.

What to look for:

  • Black, pepper-like feces clinging to walls, scattered on floors, or smeared on surfaces, fabrics, and insulation.
  • Rectangular, pouch-like egg casings. These will be a dark brownish orange color, or a gradient of brown to orangish yellow.
  • Shed exoskeletons. As cockroaches grow, they shed their skins several times—often as many as thirteen times.

Where to look:

  • Dark, damp environments in your home: They're drawn to areas of high humidity and where there are moisture issues.
  • Under and around appliances: They commonly feed on the filth that is stuck to the sides of ovens and they hide in the hard, metal voids of appliances.
  • In the cabinets underneath your kitchen and bathroom sinks: These are moisture points. Inspect any gaps around pipes that enter your home. Also, consider having those gaps sealed.
  • In the backs of food shelves and food cabinets.
  • In attic spaces and inside items stored in attic spaces, such as furniture and boxes.
  • Underneath mats and rugs.
  • In gaps and cracks throughout your home.
