Cockroaches are a hardy bunch and the American roach is no exception. The largest species of house-invading cockroaches, these pests have been plaguing people since the beginning of time.
What do American cockroaches look like?
Often about two inches in length, adult American cockroaches may exceed three inches. They are reddish-brown with a distinctive yellowish-colored pattern resembling a figure-8 behind their head. Both females and males have fully developed wings and are capable of flight.
Where am I likely to see American cockroaches?
American roaches are often found in dark, warm, and moist environments. Inside, you’ll see them in basements, bathrooms, and other humid rooms. They’re often lurking around tubs, floor drains, and pipes. Outside, American roaches infest landfills and can be found in damp areas like under mulch.
What do American cockroaches eat?
American cockroaches living outside feed on small insects, fungi, algae, and even particles of wood and leaves. Inside their diet consists of any crumbs and other small pieces of food that they come across while foraging for food. They also enjoy dining on pet food.
Are American cockroaches dangerous?
Yes, these unsanitary bugs are dangerous. They have the potential to carry a large number of viruses and bacteria on their bodies and in their feces which can cause diarrhea, dysentery, and other serious health concerns. Also, their shed skins and feces can trigger asthma attacks; this is especially true for young children.
