German Cockroaches

German cockroaches

Brief overview of German cockroaches

The most common species of cockroach, German roaches breed quickly (each female can carry 40 eggs at a time), and can squeeze through very small spaces. Unfortunately, German cockroaches are also very intrusive bugs and difficult to eliminate once they find a way inside a home or business.

What do German cockroaches look like?

Rather small compared to other roaches in Texas, German cockroaches grow to between 1/2 and 5/8 of an inch in length. Light brown or tan in color, they have two distinctive black stripes running horizontally down behind their heads. German roaches do have wings but they rarely fly, instead they run very quickly wherever they go.

Where am I likely to see German cockroaches?

As is the case with most roaches, German cockroaches prefer dark, warm, and humid areas that are close to food sources. Inside, they are often found under appliances, inside cupboards, under sinks, and in basements and laundry rooms. They are more commonly found indoors and often make their way inside in bags, cardboard boxes, used appliances, and used furniture.

What do German cockroaches eat?

Soap, shampoo, and toothpaste are not part of the German roach’s beauty routine, but rather all things that they like to eat. They’ll also feed on book bindings, glue, starches, sweets, and meats.

Are German roaches dangerous?

Yes, German roaches are dangerous. Like other roaches, they have the potential to introduce viruses and bacteria from their bodies and in their feces that can lead to food poisoning, diarrhea, and dysentery. Cockroaches are also linked to triggering asthma attacks and so it’s important to control these pests if they’ve infested your home or business.
