House Flies
Brief overview of house flies
As their name suggests house flies are a common household pest that are found living across the entire world. They are both a nuisance and danger to have living in your home and around your family. They feed on any food sources found in your home and lay their eggs on decaying animal and plant materials.
What do house flies look like?
The adult house fly’s appearance makes them fairly easy to identify; they have a dull gray body and four black vertical lines on the top of their bodies; along with having one velvety gold stripe and one velvety silver stripe on their face. Adults grow to between 1/8th and ¼ of an inch in length, they have specialized sponging mouthparts and large reddish-colored eyes. Their larvae (maggots) are off-white in color, they have a pointed dark-colored head and their body tapers larger toward the head from the tail.
Where am I likely to see house flies?
Flies are attracted to properties and homes that offer them easy access to food, water, and breeding sites. They will congregate around garbage, animal carcasses, excrement, and decaying fruits and vegetation. Once attracted to your property they may enter inside of your home through gaps found around windows and doors or through screens that are torn or damaged.
Are house flies dangerous?
Yes, house flies are considered to be a dangerous pest. To understand why these nuisance pests are actually a danger to have living inside of your home, you have to examine their behavior. Before finding their way into your home, these flies were landing on and feeding upon garbage, excrement, carcasses, and other unsanitary things. When house flies find their way into your home the disease, bacteria, and parasites that they have living on their bodies and legs are then transferred to the surfaces, food, and other objects inside of your home, potentially spreading cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, salmonella, and E.coli to you and your family members. Also, in order to feed, house flies must regurgitate their stomach contents onto the food they want to consume to liquefy it before being able to ingest it, causing even more contamination.
