Brief Overview of Confused Flour Beetles

The confused flour beetle is a common pest of stored grains and pantry items. These stored product pests are found living across the county, including North Texas. The confused flour beetle is one of the most common species of flour beetle to invade homes.

What Do Confused Flour Beetles Look Like?

Confused flour beetles are shiny reddish-brown in color, winged, and grow to be about 1/8th of an inch in length. Their head and the upper parts of their thorax are heavily covered with tiny punctures, their wing covers are ridged end-to-end, and their antennae widen out gradually from the base. Even though they are winged, confused flour beetles are never seen flying. Their larvae measures 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch in length, are yellowish-white in color, and have a lean worm-like appearance.

Where Am I Likely to See Confused Flour Beetles?

The confused flour beetle is normally found invading homes, grocery stores, mills, and food processing facilities. They are unable to feed on whole kernels, so they are commonly found feeding on stored products like flour and cereal, preferring products that have a higher moisture content or that require less work to consume. Adults are attracted to sources of light, and because of this, they may enter homes through spaces found around windows and doors after being attracted by outdoor lighting.

Are Confused Flour Beetles Dangerous?

Confused flour beetles do not pose a specific threat to people, but they will contaminate food found inside kitchen and pantry areas. When confused flour beetles invade a food source they contaminate it with their eggs, shed skins, and feces, causing the infested product to have a bad taste and odor associated with them.
