Fungus Gnats

fungus gnats

Brief overview of fungus gnats

Fungus gnats are a short-lived (3-10 days) species of fly. They are very fragile and can easily be squished. The females lay their eggs in very moist soil or soil that has been overwatered. After the larvae hatch from their eggs they begin to feed on the fungus that is found in the humid, wet soil.

What do fungus gnats look like?

Adult fungus gnats grow to a small size of 1/8th of an inch in length. Their wings are smoky in color and have a distinct Y-shaped pattern on them. The fungus gnat’s body is mosquito-like in appearance; their slender body is black or gray in color; they have long slender legs, and long antennae. The fungus gnat’s larvae have a translucent, worm-like body and a black head capsule.

Where am I likely to see fungus gnats?

Fungus gnats are usually found flying low to the ground to stay close to plants and the soil; they can also be found gathering around decaying mulch, compost piles, and woodpiles. Fungus gnats are attracted to light and therefore can be found gathering around windows, doors, and lamps. Their population is usually at its highest in the fall because the cooler weather allows the soil to hold more moisture. Fungus gnats are most likely to be found indoors during the fall and winter seasons because it is the time of year when outdoor potted plants are brought inside.

Are fungus gnats dangerous?

Fungus gnats are not known to pose any dangers or health risks to people. Fungus gnats can, however, cause damage to houseplants and seedlings by feeding on their roots. Plants that are planted in soil that is infested with fungus gnats may wilt and experience root rot.
