Springtails
Brief overview of springtails
Springtails are nuisance pest that are found living and breeding in areas of high moisture; these pests occasionally invade homes and other buildings. They are found living throughout the United States, including in North Texas. Springtails acquired their name because of their unique ability to “spring” themselves away from danger.
What do springtails look like?
Springtails are a tiny pest, to the naked eye they appear gray in color when in reality they come in a wide variety of colors like blue, purple, yellow, orange and gray. Adults grow to between 1/32 and 1/8th of an inch in length, they are soft-bodied, wingless, and have 6 legs. They have a furcular; a tail-like appendage found underneath of their abdomen; when the springtail releases their furcular from their abdomen they send themselves flying through the air in a spectacular display of acrobatics!
Where am I likely to see springtails?
Outside springtails are found in moist environments feeding on decaying vegetation, bacteria, insects, feces, and pollen. Springtails need a moist humid environment to live because they “breathe” and absorb water through their body covering. If the ground becomes too saturated with water due to heavy rains these small insects will migrate into homes and buildings through cracks and other small openings found in the foundation and exterior walls. Inside, these moisture-seeking pests are usually found in damp areas like basements, laundry rooms, bathrooms, window sills, and inside crawl spaces; they can also be found in the damp soil of potted plants.
Are springtails dangerous?
No, springtails are not a danger to people, pests, structures, or established potted plants; they are considered to be nuisance pests as they don’t bite or sting. Springtails do have the ability to enter homes and other buildings in large numbers and can be difficult to find and completely eradicate without the help of an experienced, trained professional.
